1 - 3 - 6 (or sooner!)
1 month - If your baby refers on the newborn hearing screening before being discharged from the hospital, make every effort to get them rescreened by 1 month of age.
3 months - If your baby refers on the rescreening from the hospital, make every effort to have a full diagnostic audiological evaluation and diagnosis by 3 months of age.
6 months (preferably sooner) - If your baby is diagnosed with a hearing loss, start rehabilitation as quickly as possible!
Rehabilitation for a child with hearing loss is a combined effort between early intervention teams, audiologist, primary care physician, ear, nose & throat specialist, geneticist, counselors and other allied health professionals. The sooner the rehabilitation begins, the better the outcome.
Choosing pediatric specialists in every area of your journey of a child with hearing is important. Professionals who don't routinely serve infants and children may not be the best choice and may not know all the opportunities available for your child.
If insurance does not cover your child's first set of hearing aids, there is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving young children in the state that will. Please contact our office for more information.
